The goal of Montenegro is to become an energy-independent country by 2030, Prime Minister Dritan Abazović said at today’s Government session. As he stated, the plan is to double the capacity of the underwater cable to Italy, and to build new solar and wind power plants throughout the country.
Abazović stated at the Government session at which the draft of the spatial plan of Montenegro was adopted with the proposal of the public hearing program, that in the coming period it will be seen whether the Komarnica hydroelectric power plant (HPP) will be built.
“Our goal is to protect the environment. To be clear, the spatial plan clearly stated the facts for Komarnica. It was also stated that the institutions of the system that deal with the ecological aspect express great reservations and oppose the construction of that facility. A great debate remains to be held whether Montenegro needs it or not”, said Abazović.
Montenegro’s plan is to double the capacity of the underwater cable to Italy, and the construction of transmission lines in several locations is also planned.
“That is the essence of electricity export in the coming period. Also, from Ulcinj, through other cities, and to the north, new solar power plants, wind power plants and large transmission lines are planned”, stated Abazović.
He also said that the construction of a terminal is planned in Bar, for which contracts have already been signed.
Let us remind you that the construction and installation of a fixed terminal for the import of liquefied natural gas and a gas thermal power plant are planned near the Port of Bar, and these are projects worth hundreds of millions of euros.
The American companies Enerflex energy systems and Wethington energy innovation are interested in these projects, and in May a Memorandum of Understanding was signed with them regarding the provision of support for the improvement of the energy infrastructure in Montenegro.
