Brskovo mine under question mark

Miners’ Day was greeted by uncertainty as to whether the Brskovo mine would be opened and what consequences it might have for people’s health and the environment.

– An open-pit mine is planned, and below the open-pit mine a hydro-accumulation, which will use the water of the river Rudnica, for the purposes of ore processing. A sufficient number of reasons for the citizens of Mojkovac to be afraid of what is being planned above their houses, above their heads and to go through a trauma again, even more terrible than they had in the previous period – said Miodrag Fuštić from the civic initiative Healthy Mojkovac.

The concession area planned for the Brskovo mine is located in the vicinity of the two protected areas – NP Biogradska gora and the Tara River.

However, the Swiss company Tara Resources assures that the citizens of Mojkovac have nothing to worry about.

The company’s CEO, Richard Boffey, said they will not build a tailings dump like the one that existed before.

– There will be no impact on drinking water in the city, and we will apply all standards, so dust will not be a problem for the local community either – he assures.

Citizens, however, do not believe these promises due to their bad experience with the previous tailings dump.

Miloš Radmanović said that the mine destroyed many young people.

– It is a big mistake that it was done. There are no more miners to work. The miners are extinct – he said.

Apart from the fact that the mine would directly affect the health of the population, the director of Ski Center Žarski, Ljubomir Vukadinović, claims that the opening of the mine would close the story of the tourist development of this region.
