The fishing sector has realistic predispositions to become a much more important branch of the economy in the coming period, said the executive director of MM Ribarstvo, Jovan Martinović, and added that Skadar Lake and the Adriatic Sea have enormous potential.

Skadar Lake and the Adriatic Sea are a huge potential that not even much bigger countries than Montenegro can boast of. In this sense, the fishing sector has real predispositions to become a much more significant branch of the economy in the period to come,” said Martinović for the Chamber of Commerce Gazette (PKCG).

He stated that the production and processing of fish and fish products is an extremely demanding and complex activity that requires constant responsibility throughout the entire process in order to ultimately obtain a completely safe and high-quality product.

“I am sure that in this respect we have a product range with great prospects for entering the world market,” said Martinović, whose company won several gold medals at the Novi Sad Agricultural Fair.

Factory for processing and canning fish – MM Ribarstvo is a family business that was founded on the basis of a tradition of more than 60 years.

“That all great things arise and are born out of love is evidenced by our products, which are unique in the world and will not leave anyone indifferent with their smell and taste. What further positions us at the very top of Montenegro’s gastronomic offer is the fact that our products from the assortment of freshwater fish are 100 percent Montenegrin”, explained Martinović.

The journey from catching fish on Lake Skadar to processing and production to the finished product is largely based on traditional recipes.

He highlighted Montenegrin gift packaging as a completely new product in terms of design, packaging and purpose, given that it was primarily designed for tourists who visit Montenegro and want to buy something authentic to the country they visited.

“The packaging includes four cans of hot-smoked carp in vegetable oil as well as a brochure about Lake Skadar with a serial number indicating a limited series of products,” added Martinović.

Speaking about the conditions that must be created for the development of fisheries, he said that the primary priority for the development of fisheries and from which there is no deviation is the fight against poaching and suppression of illegal activities that directly threaten the fish stock.

The problem of poaching on Lake Skadar and the Adriatic Sea is something that has been going on for years and the state’s inability to deal with irresponsible individuals is a devastating fact. The formation of fishing harbors on Lake Skadar would certainly be a step in the right direction towards establishing control over fishing”, Martinović believes.
