We cannot expect to close the chapter on fishing without the construction of fishing ports. Ulcinj is the city with the most commercial fishermen, and it has moved the furthest along that path, so the locals hope that the construction of the port will begin in the next two years.

– We have had so many cases of being caught by the sea, these big waves, leaving the Bojana river and not being able to return. And we have nowhere to hide. And it was precisely in this place that we were looking for that rescue, to save our boats and our lives – says Željko Knežević.

Ulcinj is the city with the most registered commercial fishermen. The main condition for the development of fishing is precisely the port in our southernmost municipality.

– Without a port, fishermen in Ulcinj cannot fish or deal with it. Back in 2018, Montenegro planned the construction of a port through an arrangement with the World Bank. A study by a Greek consultant has been completed for Ulcinj. There are no pronounced negative impacts on the environment, but the final decision will be made by the Environmental Protection Agency – said Katarina Burzanović, Director of the Directorate for the Fisheries Sector.

– I hope that they will recognize the strategic importance of the construction of this port, that we will very soon have the final documentation, therefore a positive solution, which will create the formal, legal and technical conditions for the construction of the fishing port – she says.

And the fishing sector, adds Burzanović, which is very dedicated to this work.

– We have implemented a large number of activities, I would like to praise the efforts of Minister Joković, who succeeded in communicating with the World Bank to secure funds for the construction of a fishing port.

Željko Knežević says that without a port, fishermen cannot even have better vessels.

– We are now tied to small boats, we have nowhere to tie larger boats.
