Over 80 percent of electricity is produced by hydro and thermal power plants

In recent years, the state has emphasized the production of electricity from renewable energy sources (RES), so solar and wind power plants (VE and SE) have been built, but still more than 80 percent of the electricity produced comes from “traditional” production facilities, i.e. thermal power plants (TE) Pljevlja and two hydropower plants (HE) Perućica and Piva.

This is shown by the report of the Regulatory Agency for Energy and Regulated Utilities (REGAGEN) for last year, which is in the parliamentary procedure.

According to the report, Montenegro produced over three thousand gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity last year.

– In Montenegro, 3,235.09 GWh of electricity was produced, and it is observed that in 2022, the production of the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant is dominant in the energy mix and represents 44.95 percent of the total production. The share of renewable energy sources and highly efficient cogeneration in the total electricity production in 2022 was 55.05 percent – the report states.

EPCG also plans to install two solar power plants on its Slano and Vrtac dams near Perućica, the largest hydroelectric power plants in the country. The total capacity would be 3.7 megawatts. The government included these two projects as priority investments. Also, in Montenegro, the plan is to build several private solar power plants throughout the country, which should significantly increase the share of energy produced in this way. The plan is to build a solar park in Šavnik with a capacity of 220 megawatts, as well as a solar power plant in Cetinje with a capacity of 225 megawatts. There are also plans to build solar power plants in Nikšić and Cetinje. At the beginning of this year, the Government lowered the VAT rate on solar panels.
