Ivan Asanović, the Director of the Montenegrin Electric Transmission System (CGES), and Enrico Casari, a representative of Alcazar Energy, have signed a contract to connect the Bijela wind farm to the transmission system.

This agreement marks the beginning of infrastructure development for integrating the Bijela wind farm into the grid, reinforcing the commitment to advancing renewable energy sources (RES) in Montenegro. CGES described the contract as a significant step towards green transition and achieving sustainable development goals.

Connecting the wind farm to the transmission system is essential for creating a more secure and efficient energy infrastructure, demonstrating CGES’s dedication to a sustainable future and energy transition.

The Bijela wind farm will link to the Brezna transformer station in northwest Montenegro, with commercial operations expected to commence in 2027. Before this connection can occur, upgrades to the transformer station must be carried out, funded by a loan agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The signing of this contract is a pivotal moment for the Bijela wind farm, which was acquired by Alcazar Energy in September last year. Alcazar Energy is a prominent player in renewable energy in developing markets, working alongside Simes Engineering and Sistem MNE, the initial project developers.

This agreement underscores Alcazar Energy’s goal of establishing the largest renewable energy platform in the Western Balkans. With a planned capacity of 118.8 megawatts (MW), the project will double Montenegro’s installed wind capacity and is projected to create over 800 construction jobs. Once operational, it will provide clean energy for more than 20,700 households annually and prevent the emission of over 260,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year.

Harnessing wind energy is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a cleaner energy future. Investing in renewable sources like wind farms not only supports environmental sustainability but also decreases reliance on fossil fuels, stimulates economic growth, and generates new employment opportunities in the green energy sector.

This project highlights CGES’s strategic focus on modernizing and developing renewable resources. The signing ceremony was also attended by Dragan Perunović, Director of the Development and Investment Sector, along with Alcazar Energy representatives Marko Radulović and Dejan Milić.
