Stojan Abazović, the president of the Tourist Organization (TO) of Žabljak, announced that this summer is looking promising based on early reservations and bookings. He noted that Žabljak has had a significantly better pre-season compared to last year, with positive outcomes also seen throughout June.

“This year, we’ve had better weather conditions, contributing to increased visitor numbers. This is crucial for us because our guests predominantly spend time in nature, the National Park, hiking and other outdoor activities,” Abazović told Media Birou.

He added that numerous events scheduled for this year will enhance the city’s tourism offerings. Annual events such as Wild Beauty Art, various sports competitions including Durmitor Skyrace, Durrador, Durmitor Trail Run, and Extreme Triathlon will take place. Additionally, the Municipality and TO will organize basketball and teqball tournaments.

Abazović highlighted ongoing roadworks on the main city thoroughfare in Žabljak, set to be completed by July. A major concert for tourists and locals is planned for the same period.

“Furthermore, we are nearing completion of the Eco Smart Park project, which includes free internet access and an interactive kiosk providing essential area information. This park will serve as a hub for numerous events organized jointly with the Žabljak Cultural Center,” explained Abazović.

Addressing challenges, Abazović pointed out illegal construction as a significant issue that has inundated Žabljak recently, leading to a doubling of tourist accommodation capacities in the last two years.

“Statistics show a continual increase, and I fear market saturation regarding infrastructure. We currently have an excess of properties in Žabljak, both completed and under construction. It’s challenging to fill these vast accommodation capacities. I believe this could lead to a cheap tourism product and poor service quality,” warned Abazović.

He emphasized the need for a sustainable tourism plan aligned with local residents, urging government intervention to tackle these critical issues. Abazović also discussed the challenging winter tourism season due to snow shortages, advocating for snowmaking facilities to revive winter tourism.

“With ongoing infrastructure developments, including the main city road completion and the upgraded city square, Žabljak is poised to welcome guests more effectively than ever before. Better times are ahead for us,” concluded Abazović.

Visitors to Durmitor, including first-timers from the UK, expressed their delight at experiencing the natural beauty of the area, particularly the iconic Black Lake, a must-see attraction for every tourist in Žabljak.
