Green logistics hub: Plans unveiled for a State of the Art fresh produce distribution center in Danilovgrad

In Danilovgrad, the construction of a logistics center for the storage and distribution of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, as well as other food products, is planned.

The investor has submitted a request to the Environmental Protection Agency for a decision on the necessity of preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment Report, and the Municipality of Danilovgrad has issued urban-planning and technical conditions. As can be seen, the applicant is an individual.

The surface area of the location for the construction of the logistics center is 14,207 m2. The gross building area of the facility will be 7,560.205 m2.

The project envisions the facility consisting of two high-rise sections. The first is for expedition and administrative purposes and will have a ground floor and a floor, while the storage part will be one floor (ground floor).

A high rack warehouse with a capacity of approximately 5,000 tons is planned for storing and distributing fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables, as well as other food products – states the document.

The construction of the facility is planned in phases, with the first phase covering a storage capacity of approximately 3,000 tons, and the second phase, an additional 2,000 tons.

The second phase represents a simple extension to the storage part of the first phase in all parameters, and the complete infrastructure of the first phase is designed to smoothly accommodate the second phase – it is explained.

In the facility’s first construction phase, around 80% of the storage capacity is intended for fresh goods at temperatures from 0 to +8 °C, and 20% for frozen goods at -20 °C. In addition to this, the first phase includes space for receiving and dispatching goods, an area of approximately 600 m2, with a height of 4.50 m, at temperatures of +5 / +10 °C, with several loading and unloading places for trucks.

Above the expedition space on the upper floor, there is an administrative area. In the middle of the facility, where the storage refrigeration chambers are located, a manipulative corridor is planned, with a width of 4.00 m, a height of 5.00 m, at a temperature of +10 °C.

In the facility’s second construction phase, approximately 75% of the storage capacity is planned for fresh goods at temperatures of 0/+8 °C, and 25% for frozen goods at -20 °C. A manipulative corridor is planned through the middle of the facility, with the same width and height as in the first phase, all the way to the end of the facility – stated in the Report.

A machine room with an area of approximately 80 m2, a height of 5.50 m, is designated for the placement of refrigeration equipment and is located at the front of the facility, outside the refrigeration chambers.

For storing goods, a rack storage system for accommodating euro-pallets (80×120 cm), with four pallet levels (the ground under the facility is considered the first pallet level), is planned. Rows of pallet racks are arranged in a way that leaves a free width of a minimum of 3 meters for forklift manipulation.

The refrigeration system for cooling the facility is planned as a two-stage ammonia refrigeration system with pump circulation and ceiling coolers in each chamber/space being cooled. The operation of the facility will be automatic, with a temperature monitoring system and alarms for all cooled spaces.

Essentially, it involves the import and handling of goods stored in chambers under specific conditions, as well as the loading process of goods leaving for retail outlets. The warehouse is intended exclusively for palletized goods where industrial and euro pallets are in use. Bulk goods are not intended for storage – it is stated in the project.

One of the main factors in designing facilities of this type is the intensive transport of freight vehicles within the location, with the largest horizontal and vertical dimensions stopping with their rear end in the expedition area, both for loading and unloading of goods. To adequately ensure functionality, a manipulative space is necessary at the location, including the processes of entry and exit of transport vehicles onto the local road. At the rear of the facility, a ramp for the entry-exit of forklifts onto the surrounding terrain is designed for their servicing. The entrance for employees is secured from the side of the facility, from the parking area for passenger cars.

At the location, 72 parking spaces for passenger cars are planned, as well as a service road with a width of 3.5 m, which can be circumvented from all sides of the facility.

The remaining surfaces are landscaped with grassy areas, as well as seasonal and perennial plants characteristic of this region. A protective fence of industrial type is planned around the facility, and the entrance gate is electronic with video surveillance.
