Foreigners save 1.3 billion euros in Montenegrin banks

Total deposits in Montenegrin commercial banks as of October 31st, 2023 amount to 5.5 billion euros, and the majority – 2.86 billion or 52 percent – refers to legal entities, i.e. companies. The rest of 2.68 billion euros, or 48 percent, refers to deposits of natural persons and entrepreneurs.

According to the data of the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG), deposits of domestic natural persons amount to 1.8 billion euros (or 33 percent), non-residents 1.3 billion euros (24 percent), while deposits of companies amount to 1.8 billion euros (33 percent).

“From the perspective of the term structure of the total deposit potential of banks, demand deposits account for 81.45 percent. Short-term deposits, i.e. deposits of up to one year, make up 90.16 percent, while long-term deposits make up 9.84 percent of the total deposits in the system,” according to the CBCG.

According to the monthly data on the 50 largest depositors submitted by the banks to the Central Bank of Montenegro on October 31st, 2023, the largest single demand deposit amounts to EUR 51.8 million and refers to a resident legal entity.

Three banks have more than 50 percent of total deposits, interest is going to zero.

The three commercial banks with the largest amount of deposits cover 53.3 percent of the market share, the CBCG stated.

Crnogorska komercijalna bank (CKB) leads with a share of 24.3 percent, Hipotekarna bank with 14.6 percent and NLB Bank with a share of 14.5 percent in total deposits in the system.
