The Tax Administration carried out 1,476 inspections between 1 May and 16 July, identifying irregularities at 213 taxpayers, equivalent to approximately 14.4 per cent of inspected businesses.
Inspectors issued 327 infringement orders carrying €1,132,550 of nominal penalties. A total of 106 offenders accepted responsibility and used the statutory right to pay half the assessed amount, producing actual payments of €255,800. Temporary operating bans were imposed on 22 businesses.
The enforcement campaign is focused on recording turnover, issuing fiscal receipts, registering employees and meeting other tax obligations in sectors whose revenues rise sharply during the summer. The detected non-compliance rate indicates that informal trading remains material despite electronic fiscalisation and repeated seasonal controls.
For compliant hotels, restaurants, retailers and transport operators, stronger enforcement reduces the pricing advantage enjoyed by businesses that conceal revenue or employ undeclared labour. The immediate operational risk is that temporary closures during July and August can destroy a large part of an individual operator’s annual earnings. Businesses dependent on seasonal cash flow consequently face a greater penalty from weak controls than the headline fine alone suggests.
