Montenegro continues to place transport infrastructure at the centre of its development strategy, with the Bar-Boljare highway remaining one of the most transformative projects underway. The ongoing construction of the Matesevo–Andrijevica section is particularly significant, not only because of the engineering complexity involved, but because of its long-term economic implications.
The highway is expected to create a stronger logistics backbone for Montenegro, reducing transport costs, improving mobility, strengthening regional trade flows and opening up underdeveloped inland regions. For the tourism industry, improved connectivity can extend visitor flows beyond the Adriatic coastline, enhance onward travel to Serbia and make the country more accessible year-round.
Beyond purely economic gains, the corridor reinforces Montenegro’s strategic connectivity with Serbia and broader European markets, positioning the country as a more integrated transport hub rather than a geographic endpoint. However, the financial scale of such projects demands disciplined execution, strong governance, fiscal caution and environmental responsibility to ensure long-term sustainability.
If successfully completed and integrated into wider European transport networks, the highway could reshape Montenegro’s internal economic geography and strengthen its regional economic relevance.
