Port of Bar reports stronger cargo flows, signalling renewed logistics momentum

The Port of Bar has recorded a steady increase in cargo throughput, a development that suggests a rebound in Montenegro’s logistics sector after several years of subdued performance. Growth has been driven by higher volumes of containerised goods, increased transit from neighbouring countries, and the return of several shipping routes that had previously reduced or suspended service. Although growth rates remain modest by regional standards, the upward trend is an encouraging signal for a port that has long been seen as an underutilised strategic asset.

Several factors contribute to the improvement. Rising regional demand, particularly from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, has redirected certain logistics flows toward Bar as companies seek alternatives to congested or more expensive routes elsewhere in the Adriatic. The port has also benefitted from upgraded equipment and better operational coordination, which have reduced handling times and improved reliability. Private-sector operators note that even incremental improvements in efficiency materially enhance competitiveness.

Yet structural challenges remain. Connectivity limitations—especially rail quality on the Bar–Belgrade corridor—continue to constrain growth potential. The port’s ability to attract major logistics contracts depends not only on its maritime capabilities but on seamless hinterland connections. Additionally, long-planned concession and investment decisions have moved slowly, creating uncertainty for potential investors.

Still, the recent uptick in throughput suggests momentum that could be amplified through targeted infrastructure upgrades and clearer investment frameworks. If Montenegro positions the port strategically within regional logistics networks, Bar could become a more significant player in Adriatic trade, supporting broader economic diversification.
