The total number of cards in Montenegro, regardless of the number of functions on the card, according to the last processed data at the end of the first quarter of 2023, i.e. on March 31st, 2023, was 526,033, the ADRIA portal was informed by the Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG).

– The data represents the total number of payment cards issued by payment service providers (credit institutions). Please note that all credit institutions operating on the Montenegrin market, 11 of them, operate with payment cards, that is, issue payment cards – say the CBCG.

Compared to the previous period, the number of issued bank cards is growing in Montenegro.

– On December 31st, 2022, the total number of issued payment cards was 525,849, while in the first quarter of 2023, 526,033 cards were recorded, which indicates an increase in the total number of payment cards in Montenegro by 0.03%. At the end of 2022, as well as in the first quarter of 2023, debit cards had the largest share in the total number of cards with a payment function – the CBCG pointed out.

That the cards are actively used is best shown by the fact that the value of transactions with them, during the last year, exceeded EUR 900 million.

– The value of transfers realized by payment cards in 2022 amounted to EUR 913,642,254, while in the first quarter of 2023 this amount was EUR 249,506,534. Compared to the first quarter of 2022, the value of transfers increased by 39% in the same period of 2023 – the CBCG concluded.
