The traditional Mimosa Festival (Praznik mimoze) in Herceg Novi once again confirmed its role as one of the most important tourism and cultural events on the Montenegrin coast, attracting more than 20,000 visitors during the first fifteen days of the celebration. The strong attendance highlights the continuing importance of the festival for winter tourism and the broader economic activity of the city.
The festival, now in its 57th edition, traditionally takes place in February, marking the early blooming of the mimosa flower along the Adriatic coast. Over the course of approximately two weeks of celebrations, Herceg Novi hosts a diverse program of cultural, entertainment and gastronomic events designed to attract both domestic visitors and tourists from across the region.
During the festival period the city organizes numerous public events including concerts, parades, traditional feasts and carnival activities that transform the coastal town into one of the liveliest destinations on the Adriatic during the winter season. The program typically includes street performances, majorette parades, brass band concerts and carnival processions, which are central elements of the long-standing festival tradition.
One of the most recognizable segments of the celebration is the Feast of Mimosa, Fish and Wine, where visitors gather along the coastal promenade to enjoy local seafood, regional wines and traditional music. The event symbolizes the Mediterranean lifestyle that Herceg Novi has cultivated as part of its tourism identity.
In addition to gastronomic events, the festival includes major concerts by regional music performers, theatrical performances, exhibitions and cultural programs hosted in the city’s squares and cultural venues. These events create a festive atmosphere that extends across the entire municipality, from the historic old town to coastal districts such as Igalo.
The Mimosa Festival has long played a strategic role in extending the tourism season beyond the traditional summer months. By attracting thousands of visitors during late winter, the event supports hotels, restaurants and local businesses during a period when tourism activity would otherwise be significantly lower.
Tourism authorities in Herceg Novi view the festival as one of the city’s most important promotional events, helping position the town as a year-round destination rather than purely a summer resort. The combination of cultural programs, gastronomy and outdoor festivities offers visitors a distinctive experience rooted in the region’s coastal traditions.
Over the decades, the Mimosa Festival has evolved into one of the most recognizable tourism events in Montenegro and the wider Adriatic region. The continuing strong attendance demonstrates the enduring appeal of the celebration and its importance for the local economy.
With tens of thousands of visitors participating in the festivities each year, the Mimosa Festival remains not only a symbol of the arrival of spring on the Adriatic coast but also a major driver of tourism activity in Herceg Novi, reinforcing the city’s position as one of Montenegro’s most vibrant cultural and tourism centers.
