Monteput is considering the construction of solar power plants along the highway and has issued a tender for a techno-economic study to assess the solar potential for electricity production and use along the Smokovac-Mateševo highway section. The tender value is €24,958.68 without VAT, or €30,200 with VAT. The study is expected to be completed within 90 days from the contract date.

Montenegro’s geographical location offers significant solar potential, which is above the European average. This highlights the need to explore solar energy use on the existing Smokovac-Mateševo section, and potentially on the upcoming Bar-Boljare highway section.

The study will analyze electricity consumption along the highway, with a focus on tunnels, bridges, interchanges, toll stations, and other facilities that require power. The main challenge lies in access roads, distance from the electrical infrastructure and securing land for solar panel installations.

The Smokovac-Mateševo section has substantial electricity demand, particularly from the 16 two-tube tunnels, which account for over 80% of the total consumption. The lighting and ventilation systems in these tunnels are major consumers. The study will use software tools like PVSyst or PVCase for simulations and numerical calculations to optimize energy use, reduce costs, and mitigate electricity price fluctuations.

The study will also examine solar energy potential along the Bar-Boljare highway section, covering legal frameworks, capacity analysis, connection to the grid, energy exchange, economic viability, system management and the impact of electric vehicle charging stations.
