Montenegro’s northern municipality of Kolašin is preparing to launch a major new tourism infrastructure project: the construction of a €101 million cable car that will connect the town directly with its nearby ski resorts. Local officials say the project is now fully funded in the capital budget and moving into the tendering and implementation phase, marking one of the largest single investments in the region’s winter tourism sector.
The cable-car system will link the town with the Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600 ski areas, with intermediate stations planned along the route. According to Vasilije Ivanović, Vice President of the Kolašin Municipality, all necessary conditions have been met to proceed with tendering for the construction contractor, and the municipality expects the project to be operational over the next two to three years as part of a broader regional tourism development strategy.
Ivanović described the cable car as a transformative project for Kolašin’s economy, saying it represents “the most important development in Kolašin’s history in terms of investment value and scale.” He said that by integrating the town with the ski resorts via cable car, Kolašin could become a significant regional tourism hub, offering seamless access from town centre to mountain slopes and expanding opportunities for both winter and off-season visitors.
The investment of €101 million is included in Montenegro’s capital budget and is expected to be carried out in stages over the coming years. Officials noted that all procedural and regulatory barriers have been cleared, and preparations for the tender process are nearing completion.
Local tourism authorities have pointed to strong snow conditions and increased visitor interest in the current winter season as factors supporting the project’s timing. Although it remains early in the season, initial indications suggest higher demand compared with recent years, reinforcing optimism about enhancing Kolašin’s winter tourism appeal.
The cable car will form part of a wider package of infrastructural improvements in the area. In addition to lift infrastructure, efforts are underway to improve access roads, parking, and visitor services to support anticipated increases in both domestic and international guests.
Montenegro has long sought to expand its tourism offer beyond summer coastal destinations, with winter sports infrastructure seen as a key strategic priority. Major investments in Kolašin’s skiing facilities and related transport links build on years of policy emphasis on diversifying seasonal tourism and enhancing regional economic development.
Local officials emphasise that while challenges remain—such as construction logistics in mountainous terrain and ensuring environmental sustainability—the project is a clear signal of long-term commitment to transforming Kolašin into a competitive year-round destination.
