Montenegro strengthens global tourism ties during UN tourism visit in Madrid

Montenegro could play a more active role in global tourism initiatives, officials concluded during a high-level meeting at the UN Tourism headquarters in Madrid.

Minister of Tourism Simonida Kordić met with Executive Director Natalia Bayona and Regional Director for Europe Kordula Wollteimer as part of Montenegro’s two-year presidency of the UN Tourism Commission for Europe, which began this year.

Discussions focused on key priorities of the presidency, member state interests, and implementation of the “Agenda for Europe”—a framework for regional tourism development.

Montenegro’s recent performance in the UNWTO Tourism Barometer was also highlighted. The country ranked sixth globally in tourism revenue growth compared to 2019, with an 87% increase, and ninth in tourist spending, with an 84% rise.

The UN Tourism team presented current projects and strategic goals, emphasizing areas like innovation, investment, human resources, rural tourism, market analysis, and statistics. Kordić expressed gratitude for the support and underlined tourism’s strategic role in Montenegro’s economic development.
