Montenegro’s trade dynamics: Surging imports, slumping exports

Montenegro’s total merchandise trade from January to April reached 1.45 billion euros, as per preliminary Monstat data, marking a 3.6% increase from the same period last year.

Exports amounted to 204.9 million euros, indicating a 26.2% decline, while imports surged by 10.9% to 1.25 billion euros.

The trade balance ratio dropped to 16.4%, down from 24.7% last year, Monstat reported.

Mineral fuels and lubricants dominated exports at 50.4 million euros, followed by electrical energy at 44 million euros, among others.

Imports were led by machinery and transport equipment at 326.1 million euros, with road vehicles accounting for 126.3 million euros, among other items.

Serbia emerged as Montenegro’s top trading partner during the first four months, with exports valued at 59.8 million euros and imports at 205.4 million euros.

Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina were also significant export destinations, receiving goods worth 15.3 million euros and 13.2 million euros, respectively.

Apart from Serbia, China was the primary import partner, with imports totaling 157.6 million euros, followed by Germany at 132.5 million euros.

The majority of merchandise trade occurred with CEFTA signatories and the European Union.
