Growth and composition of deposits in citizens and businesses in 2023

At the close of December last year, deposits from both citizens and businesses reached a total of 5.483 billion EUR, marking a 4.84% increase compared to the end of 2022. This data is highlighted in the 2023 report of the Deposit Protection Fund, which was approved during the latest Government session.

The report outlines that out of the overall deposit sum, guaranteed deposits amounted to 4.983 billion EUR. Specifically, 90.88% of these deposits were from individuals entitled to guaranteed deposit repayment, with the remaining 9.12% from individuals not entitled to such repayment. Notably, all deposit categories experienced growth on an annual basis, with a 3.52% increase in deposits from individuals eligible for guaranteed repayment, and a significant 11.75% rise in guaranteed deposits.

Breaking down the protected deposits, funds deposited by the population sector accounted for 2.79 billion EUR, constituting 50.54% of the total, while deposits from the business sector totaled 2.19 billion EUR, forming part of the total of 4.983 billion EUR in deposits from both physical and legal entities eligible for guaranteed repayment.

According to data presented in the Fund’s report, the total count of depositors eligible for guaranteed repayment stood at 788,927 by the end of last year, comprising 714,900 citizens and 74,027 legal entities, or companies.

The report further delineates the distribution of deposits across various brackets. For instance, 243,325 citizens held deposits of less than five euros, while 462,137 individuals had deposits up to 50,000 EUR. Deposits ranging between 50,000 and 100,000 EUR were held by 6,091 individuals, with 3,347 citizens maintaining deposits exceeding 100,000 EUR in banks.

Regarding legal entities, the report indicates that 74,027 companies held a total of 2.212 billion in bank deposits. Of these, 15,735 companies had deposits of less than five euros, while 54,040 had deposits exceeding five euros but less than 50,000 EUR. Furthermore, 1,624 companies held deposits between 50,000 and 100,000 EUR, and 2,628 companies maintained deposits exceeding 100,000 EUR in banks.

In terms of overall depositor numbers, there were 790,628 depositors by the end of 2023, reflecting a 2.08% increase compared to the end of 2022 when there were 774,482 depositors. Notably, deposits from individuals eligible for guaranteed repayment amounted to 4.983 billion by the end of 2023, compared to 4.814 billion at the end of 2022, representing a 3.52% increase, or nearly 170 million EUR.
