Montenegrin households are increasing both debt and savings

Montenegro’s households are simultaneously borrowing and accumulating deposits at rapid rates, a combination that points to significant financial activity across the consumer sector.

Household loans reached €2.55 billion in May 2026, up 18.6% year on year. Household deposits increased 13.4% to €2.47 billion over the same period.

The near-equivalence of household deposits and household credit is striking.

It suggests that the household sector cannot be described simply as becoming more indebted. Savings are also increasing strongly, indicating that substantial liquidity remains within the banking system.

Several forces may contribute to such a pattern, but the Ministry report does not provide enough detail to identify them definitively. It does, however, show strong employment growth and increasing nominal wages.

Average employment in January-May was 5% higher than a year earlier, while average net earnings increased 2.2%.

The rapid increase in household credit may be supporting housing, consumption and other spending, while stronger employment provides borrowers with greater income capacity.

At the same time, deposit growth suggests that a significant part of household income and wealth continues to accumulate as bank savings.

For banks, this provides an important funding base. For the wider economy, however, the relationship between household borrowing and savings will increasingly influence consumption.

If credit continues to grow materially faster than income, household leverage may become a more important issue. If deposit growth remains equally strong, households may retain significant financial buffers.

For now, the 2026 figures point to a consumer sector that is financially active on both sides of the balance sheet.
