Growing interest of Hungarian tourists in Montenegro

Montenegro is seeing increasing interest from tourists from Hungary, reflecting a gradual diversification of the country’s visitor markets and stronger tourism cooperation between the two countries. The trend was highlighted during a meeting in Budapest between Montenegro’s Minister of Tourism Simonida Kordić and Hungary’s Minister of National Economy Márton Nagy, where tourism exchange and future cooperation were discussed. 

Officials noted that Hungarian travelers increasingly recognize the diversity and development of Montenegro’s tourism offer, including its Adriatic coastline, cultural heritage destinations and mountain tourism products. Improved connectivity has also played a role in this trend, particularly the importance of direct flight connections with Podgorica, which make travel between the two countries faster and more convenient.

The meeting also highlighted the broader exchange of tourists between the two markets. According to the information presented during the talks, more than 10,000 tourists from Montenegro visited Hungary in the previous year, demonstrating an expanding bilateral tourism relationship and growing interest on both sides. 

Montenegro’s tourism authorities view Hungary as an increasingly important source market within Central Europe. Hungarian travelers are showing interest not only in traditional coastal destinations such as Budva, Kotor and Tivat, but also in nature-based tourism and cultural experiences that have become more prominent in Montenegro’s tourism promotion strategy.

This shift reflects broader trends in European tourism demand. Visitors from Central Europe often seek shorter travel distances, authentic destinations and diverse experiences combining sea, mountains and heritage sites. Montenegro’s compact geography allows tourists to access multiple tourism products—from beaches and historic towns to national parks—within a relatively short distance.

For Montenegro’s tourism industry, attracting visitors from Central Europe has become strategically important as the country continues to diversify its tourism markets. Historically, a large share of visitors came from regional countries and Russia, but geopolitical changes and market shifts have encouraged tourism authorities to strengthen promotion in new markets across the European Union.

Montenegro’s tourism sector has expanded significantly over the past decade. The country recorded more than 2.6 million tourist arrivals in 2023, with the vast majority coming from foreign markets. 

In this context, increasing interest from Hungarian travelers represents part of a broader strategy to attract visitors from Central and Eastern Europe. Tourism officials believe that closer cooperation with Hungarian institutions, improved air connectivity and joint promotional activities could further expand visitor flows in the coming years.

If these trends continue, Hungary could become one of the emerging source markets supporting Montenegro’s ambition to develop a more diversified and year-round tourism sector, complementing the country’s traditional reliance on peak summer tourism along the Adriatic coast.
