Aviation connectivity and the strategic importance of Montenegro’s airports

The expansion of tourism and international investment has increased pressure on Montenegro’s aviation infrastructure. Airports in Podgorica and Tivat serve as the primary gateways for visitors arriving by air, particularly during the summer tourist season when passenger numbers rise dramatically.

Tivat Airport, located near the Bay of Kotor, plays a crucial role in serving coastal tourism destinations. However, the airport’s infrastructure faces capacity limitations during peak travel periods. Long queues, limited terminal facilities and constrained runway capacity highlight the need for modernization and expansion.

Improving aviation infrastructure is essential for sustaining tourism growth. Airlines evaluate airport efficiency, passenger handling capacity and logistical infrastructure when deciding whether to open new routes. Expanding airport facilities could therefore increase the number of direct flights connecting Montenegro with European and global destinations.

Airport modernization also has broader economic implications. Efficient air connectivity supports business travel, facilitates foreign investment and strengthens the country’s integration into global tourism networks. For Montenegro’s tourism-dependent economy, maintaining reliable aviation infrastructure is therefore a strategic priority.
